The word "animal" comes from the Latin word animalis, meaning "having breath". The biological definition of the word refers to all members of the kingdom Animalia, encompassing creatures as diverse as sponges, jellyfish, insects and humans.
Animals have several characteristics that set them apart from other living things. Animals are eukaryotic and mostly multicellular, which separates them from bacteria and most protists. All animals are heterotrophs, meaning that they feed directly or indirectly on other living things. They are often further subdivided into groups such as carnivores, herbivores, omnivores, and parasites
Animals and humans have worked side by side since the earliest times on earth when they began to be domesticated.
Domesticated animals are valued by humans for companionship and wild animals hold a special place in the hearts of many who appreciate the diversity of life which share our planet with us.
